‘HAPPY, JOYOUS & FREE!’
This painting was created on a fine Whidbey Island summer morning. The studio doors were wide open, birds chirping away, and I happened to be in an upbeat mood. All the right ingredients for a great painting! I lugged out a roll of canvas, unfurled it to the ground, cut off a chunk around 15 feet long and dropped down into blissful day of creativity, resulting in the beginnings of ‘Happy, Joyous and Free.’
As with most of my paintings, the first day was ‘intuitive’ and fast-paced, almost like floating in a subconscious state of focused contentment. Over the course of the next couple days the process became more painstaking as I added the details that brought Happy, Joyous & Free together.
This painting is different than many of my works as I used rich, deep earth tones as opposed to my usual BOLD. I’ve added dozens of very thin layers of almost invisible color to build up a translucent 'glow.' This process is referred to as glazing. Each layer not only adds a richness of color but the thin clear glaze, with each layer, adds glass-like refraction reflecting light, causing a subtle glow.
