'SECRET GARDEN' . 52" x 68" (framed size). Acrylic and inks on Canvas . 2019
Artist Notes: Secret Garden’ literally glows and it’s thru a process that took over a month to create. It started with a loose, 15’ sheet of canvas, on the floor of my studio. Working on my hands and knees, ‘wet on wet,’ using inks and liquid acrylic paint, I worked with these mediums adding various other items, twigs, leaves, feathers, etc., I would then roll and tie them up tight and left them in a corner for a few days. I’d unroll them, repeat this process until I achieved the type of texture that I wanted.
When the texture was just right, I lifted the canvas onto a very large easel to start weeks of hand work.
Oh, back the glow. I decided to hand work the canvas in the old masters style of adding glazes (clear, very subtle layers) over and over throughout the painting. This achieves a richness and depth and most important, light that refracts thru the painting. The visual effect is so subtle that most can’t really tell why they are so drawn into the painting. I believe it is these countless layers of ever so subtle shades and hues that reveal these wonderful little nooks and crannies of a secret garden.
